FAQ: FAQ

What kind of school are you, traditional, private or independent?

As a cottage school, MCCS is an alternative for parents who want to homeschool their children under the guidance of a qualified educator in a small group setting. We are a school in the sense of our community being a space for learning, but we are not registered with any state or accrediting body such that our educational philosophy and curriculum are restricted by such governing body.

Will my child receive grades?

Student learners do not receive traditional letter or numerical grades.  Family Conferences will be held twice per year.  At this time, families will receive a skills-based report that indicates how the student is progressing from Not Introduced Yet to Developing to Proficient in each area.

What is blended learning?

Blended learning incorporates multiple modalities of learning.  Students have opportunities for both online educational activities and traditional place-based classroom methods.  It offers students more choice and leadership within their learning.

What is responsive classroom?

Responsive Classroom is a student-centered, social and emotional learning approach to teaching and discipline. It is comprised of a set of research- and evidence-based practices designed to create safe, joyful, and engaging classrooms and school communities for both students and teachers.  You will observe a calm and orderly learning environment, engaging academics and developmentally responsive teaching.

What is authentic learning?

In education, authentic learning is an instructional approach that allows students to explore and discuss concepts in context.  This means that the children engage in projects that involve real-world problems that are relevant to the learner.  When you observe our learning environment, you may see math, art, and cultural studies, for example, happening simultaneously.

Do you have a Diversity & Inclusion initiative?

We agree with inclusion expert Lisa Friedman, “Inclusion is not a program. It is a mindset. It is the way we treat others and the way they treat us. Inclusion is the opportunity to learn together and from one another. And we do it because it is the right thing to do. Period.”  MCCS is committed to uplifting BIPOC stories and increasing cross cultural awareness.

Do you offer financial aid?

The Cottage School Scholarship Fund (CSSF) provides need-based scholarships to ensure the socioeconomic diversity of our classroom.  Families interested in applying for financial assistance will submit an application to the CSSF Scholarship Selection Committee, which is processed independently from the school.

What's up with the dragonfly?

In almost every part of the world, the Dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability, and self-realization.  Our student learners embody these characteristics as they learn and grow!

"Curiosity is essential for learning, and questions are a sign of an active, inquiring mind."
